SECTION ONE: PROCESS OVERVIEW
HotJar is used to create heatmaps for our pages - to see where people click, how far they scroll, what part of the page is most interesting for them. They can also be recorded how they move their mouse, etc.
SECTION TWO: PROCESS EXECUTION
Log in to HotJar on: https://www.hotjar.com/
Select the domain that you want to use for tracking (or add a new one):
There you can either check existing page or create a new heatmap:
If you want to add a new one, first install the tracking code on your page(s) - either directly or using Google Tag Manager:
And then verify the installation:
You should get this result:
Then go to heatmaps, click new heatmaps:
And enter the heatmap name (e.g. “9to5 1. Salespage”) :
Select 2,000 pageviews (the most we can use with current plan):
Select a specific page and simple URL match (to allow tracking parameters):
And launch it.
When you check the results, you can filter it based on device, type of action (click more, scroll) and then also view data and download the results as an image:
To share the heatmap click share heatmap:
Turn it on and share the link with the rest of the team:
You can also use recordings of visitors, funnel tracking or forms - features that are definitely worth exploring in the future:
